Jeff, It was a Wonderful Life when Mr. It is the next best thing to sitting with McNally in a pub and having him tell you his war stories. In The Hot Shoe Diaries, Joe brings you behind the scenes to candidly share his lighting solutions for a ton of great images.
Joe explains how he gets the shot swarts and all including mistakes made along the wayand makes clear his rationale along the way. He shares his process candidly, advocates going out and shooting, and using the gear we have. And more diagrams, I found the sketches he posted in some chapters way more clear than long winded descriptions of where the flashes were.
A read through gives you a sense of not just the tech but also how a photographer layers the lights plans them and gives color to the scene. It rid diarirs of any notion that available light was the preferred way to shoot, and instilled an appreciation of the complexity of lighting subjects, but also of the ease with which can get incredible results.
Looking forward to the book! Cool weather as a result of the rains. Interesting stuff, but not quite what I’d hoped for. He relies almost exclusively on the use of hand-held strobes in hotshle off some really amazing results.

It was an upgrade, actually, from the hotel I was staying at. Apr 23, Gabriel rated it it was ok. I didnt know you were in Tucson either! He is a master of environmental portrait, and his work for National Geographic, Life, Time has helped shape what I consider a good photography.
As the title suggests, this book is narrower in focus, and less useful to me personally because I’m not yet a DSLR user. Hosthoe books in this series. You know I dig the noir…and you took it a whole new level.

Part one Nuts and Bolts is a 40 or so page introduction to the equipment, grip, and other best practices. Back in the country, and back on the internet.
In my opinion it is best used to give ideas about how to set shoots, to inspire you. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this book, which was basically a “here’s a great shot I took, and here’s what it took to get it lit. This book w This was fine but really is no more than a series of anecdotes. Want to Read saving…. Today your book arvived.
I will let the Nikon-ists explain whether they found it useful or not without any diagrams. I simply don’t have the depth of experience with Canon flashes to be on sure footing when talking about them.

Using Nikon Speedlights, Joe lets you in on his uncensored thought process-often funny, sometimes serious, always fascinating-to demonstrate how he makes his pictures with these small flashes. There’s always a bunch of folks out there who want to know your f-stop. It’s a glimpse of what’s possible when you throw away the possibility of mediocrity.
